Discover Goomah (A Trattoria)

Walking into Goomah (A Trattoria) for the first time felt like stepping into a neighborhood Italian kitchen where everyone already knows your name. Located at 2440 Orchard Lake Rd, Sylvan Lake, MI 48320, United States, this cozy spot blends the warmth of a family-run diner with the confidence of a well-practiced Italian restaurant. I stopped in on a busy Friday night, and within minutes it was clear why locals keep coming back. The room buzzed with conversation, plates moved quickly from kitchen to table, and the smell of simmering tomato sauce filled the air.

The menu reads like a love letter to Italian-American classics. Instead of trying to reinvent tradition, the kitchen leans into it. You’ll find familiar favorites like baked ziti, chicken parmesan, and rich meat sauces that taste like they’ve been perfected over time. When I ordered the pasta, the server explained how sauces are prepared in small batches throughout the day to keep flavors consistent. That attention to process matters. Food research from organizations like the Italian Academy of Cuisine has long emphasized that slow cooking and ingredient balance are key to depth of flavor, and you can taste that philosophy here without it ever being announced.

One thing that stands out is how approachable everything feels. Nothing is overcomplicated, yet nothing feels careless. During my visit, I noticed families sharing oversized portions, couples splitting salads, and regulars chatting with staff about menu tweaks. That kind of interaction doesn’t happen unless trust has been built over time. According to general restaurant industry studies published by the National Restaurant Association, consistency and service are two of the biggest drivers of repeat visits, and this place clearly understands both.

Reviews around town echo that experience. Many diners talk about generous portions, fair pricing, and staff who remember orders. A neighbor at the next table told me he drives past several other Italian spots just to eat here, calling it home-style Italian done right. Moments like that say more than star ratings ever could. While online reviews are subjective by nature, platforms like Google and Yelp consistently show that restaurants with strong local followings tend to maintain steady quality, even without flashy trends.

From an expertise standpoint, the kitchen seems grounded in traditional Italian-American cooking rather than regional experimentation. That’s not a downside; it’s a choice. Culinary experts like Marcella Hazan often stressed that respecting core techniques is what preserves authenticity. Here, that shows up in balanced seasoning, properly cooked pasta, and sauces that don’t overwhelm the plate. It’s comfort food, but informed comfort food.

Trust also comes from transparency. Staff are open about what dishes are best on a given day and willing to suggest alternatives if something runs out. The only limitation worth noting is that peak hours can mean a short wait, especially on weekends. That’s not a flaw so much as a sign of popularity, but it’s helpful to plan ahead if you’re in a hurry.

As a local dining option, this trattoria fits neatly into the Sylvan Lake food scene. It’s not chasing trends or gimmicks. Instead, it focuses on what matters most: a solid menu, a welcoming location, and food that feels familiar in the best way. By the time my plate was cleared, I understood why so many reviews describe the experience as comfort you can count on.

  • ***Food: Food came quickly and offered a nice range of Italian based meals, both covering your normal dishes as well more adventurous twists. We even got lucky enough to meet one of the Chefs that evening. Price was medium range, not cheapo $5-10 fast food fake Italian meals but also not $30-100 fancy. Just right for a nice evening out of the house when you don’t want to be disappointed in lousy lack luster food. Their food is cooked with a fire stove that is a centerpiece when you first walk in the door which is pretty neat. Food portions were plentiful, they did not skimp. There were 4 desserts to choose from, our group managed to choose 3 and we were not disappointed. The flavor profiles definitely popped and spoke for themselves. I noticed they offered a gluten free option as well. ***Service: Our hostess and waitress were both pleasant. Even as it got busy, our waitress let us know ahead of time that she would be back and to flag her down at any point. She answered all our questions and she even made me an off-menu mocktail which was amazing. ***Environment: Clean and friendly environment. This seemed like you could show up in both comfy clothes as well as get dressed up. The music was both feel good hits old Frank Sinatra style sophisticated. Ambiance was amber lighting with lots of fun decor everywhere which gave a lot of character. Bathrooms were clean. They do offer a “Rose Room” area which is a mostly secluded room for a larger guest reservation ( around 8, possibly more if you call). Overall, would definitely come back here without question. So many other items to try off the menu. It won’t be long till I believe this unknown gem is found and always busy and reservation only. We had family visit out of town that thanked us for taking them here. Next time we want to check out the neighboring business “ Live Bait”.

  • What a hidden gem! Our server Ryan was absolutely great, and the food was outstanding! They also own the restaurant next to them, Live Bait, so we had an option to choose from either menu. We chose more from the Goomah side this time around. I also loved how accommodating the chef was with splitting our pasta dish and scallops for us since we shared the dishes. The mushroom pizza was delicious and truly did not even need sauce with the flavor you got from the cheese and mushrooms. The crust on the pizza had that perfect crunch to it as well. The Smoky Beef Bolognese Rigatoni was equally delicious, but the scallops they had just put on the menu that day were to die for with that sauce! Those were cooked to perfection and just melted in your mouth, and the beurre blanc sauce just knocked it out of the park. We even got a chance to chat with the chef who came out during dinner! I will definitely make a return visit as there are more things on the menu that I would like to try. I would absolutely recommend this place!

  • This place! We’re new to town and hadn’t found our spot yet… until tonight. This was our first time in and we were treated like family. The food was delicious. I honestly almost didn’t come here because of the two menus (sometimes too much variety really stresses a kitchen) but I’m so glad we did. My kids love a good fish place buuuut if the menu isn’t perfect in its preparation (fish that is not too spicy, not too saucy, not to charred, etc) it can be a bust for them, so it’s nice when we can hit up a seafood spot with some other menu options as backup so we decided to give it a try. May I first say that this is the first time I’ve been to a restaurant in this area that there were real, discernible vegetables offered as a side dish, with colors other than potato brown, and that did not come out of a freezer bag???? I know this may not get as many people as excited as I am, but if you’re not from here and not used to every restaurant’s dinner menu being designed for a carb loading marathoner on raceday-eve… well, This. Is. Big. Secondly, the rest of the food was absolutely lovely. There were fish on the menu that you only see around here in a $40-$50/plate type of place at a much more affordable price point. My piccata style fish was so lovely, I ate far more than I typically do tonight. Then the service was so friendly, kind, and helpful. Once we mentioned we were new to the area just about every person on duty stopped by to chat with us, welcome us and offer recommendations and helpful tips. I am not exaggerating - a literal welcome wagon. And lastly, Lily MacPhee was on live music tonight and she was spectacular. 100 stars for this place.

  • Just stopped in to try the fairly new place that took over the former Pepino's. They divided it into two restaurants. One is Italian called Goomah and the other is an oyster/fish place called Live Bait. We both enjoyed our first experience and will definitely be back. We started with the bread service (bread from Ellen's across the street) which comes with a very nicely seasoned olive oil for dipping. Delish. It's $8 but you can request as much as you want. Could have made a meal on the bread. But, the show must go on. We split a roasted vegetable pizza and chicken Parmesan. Both were very good. Minor quibble with the chicken as we like our chicken more medallion cut but it was still tender. Foe our two sides we chose the house salad which was fabulous and the grilled garlic broccolini which was excellent. Be advised it's REALLY heavy on garlic so for garlic fans only. Our waiter Niko was awesome. Went out of his way and then some to make sure we enjoyed our meal and will always ask for him. That's Niko in the picture below! We look forward to trying the attached fish place as well but a nice addition to the area!

  • 4.33/5 GOOMAH is all about quality over quantity. Ordered the Mushroom Ravioli to-go and I'm really glad I added grilled chicken to it. If I had the dish without meat, I wouldn't have been satisfied. Regardless, I love how they make their marsala sauce and thought everything was delicious. I can see the experience being even better if you dine in.

  • Interesting concept, one side is italian and other side seafood raw bar. There is a brick oven, good cocktails and live music. Enjoyed the visit, I would return if in the area.

  • We really enjoyed our experience here! The entryway was a little busy when we walked in, several staff and no one acknowledged us. But, the host popped up very quickly and politely let us know the bar is first come first serve. The bar was inviting and spacious. We ordered the bread service to start which was incredible! The olive oil dish honestly looked a little unappetizing but the flavor was spot on. We did have to snag oil, salt and pepper from a nearby table to add to our dish for the remaining bread. Next up was the Da Grasso pizza. Amazing. Tons of topping and cooked to perfection. Really looking forward to trying other pizzas there soon! Our entree was the chicken Parmesan with fingerling potatoes and sautéed wood fired seasonal veg. HUGE portions, my husband and I shared everything and had tons of leftovers. The chicken was tender and flavorful. The potatoes were a little hard but had nice flavor. The veggies were amazing! The best side dish I’ve had at a restaurant, hands down.

  • First time, the pizza dough/crust is excellent. The Pesto Pepperoni is a delicious combo. Bolognese was also excellent with meatballs.
